Lingfeng Hill

The Lingfeng or Lingfeng Hill , is a hill located in , Zhejiang Province, People's republic of China.

Introduction

It's partially located both in the Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University, and the Botanical Garden, and is very close to the famous West Lake.

''Ling'' here means ''clever/smart'', and ''feng'' means ''peak'' in Chinese. The hill is very famous for its plum blossoms in the early spring, so there's a phrase namely ''Lingfeng Tanmei'' , which literally means ''exploring the plum blossoms on Lingfeng Hill ''.　

The Zhejiang Institute of Modern Physics, a research institute for theoretical physics, is just located on the beautiful hill.

Laohe Hill

The Laohe Hill or Laoheshan , is a renowned hill located in , Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China.

Introduction

It's located on the northwest corner of the famous West Lake and also in the Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University. It has an altitude of 156 meters, and is covered by forests. 1936, on the foot of the hill, a very large neolithic site was discovered , so it's also a very famous historic site of Hangzhou.

It's also a literature topic often appears in many essays or poems by the people who have visited Hangzhou and climbed on it.

Journal of Zhejiang University

Journal of Zhejiang University , is a journal series published by the Zhejiang University Press.

Introduction

It's the university journal of the Zhejiang University, and one of the top university journals in the People's Republic of China. It's also one of the most comprehensive university journals in China.

The journal has six branches and cover the fields of science, engineering, medicine, humanities and social sciences.

James D. Watson Institute of Genome Sciences, Zhejiang University

James D. Watson Institute of Genome Sciences , is a research institute of . It's located in , Zhejiang Province, and belongs to Zhejiang University in the People's Republic of China.

Introduction

The institute was named after the DNA structure co-discoverer Dr. James D. Watson. The institute was founded on October 6, 2003, when Jame D. Watson visited China, and it was also in the year of the fiftieth anniversary of the great discovery. Dr. Watson also wrote the title for the institute.

The institute was consulted from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, where Dr. Watson was the president. It's located in the Zhijiang Campus, Zhejiang University, close to the Qiantang River and has a very beautiful landscape.

The institute mainly offers , currently there're about 80 and PhD candidates. At present, the scientist Yang Huangming is the acting director of the institute.

Institute of Insect Sciences, Zhejiang University

Institute of Insect Sciences , is a research institute of the Zhejiang University, People's Republic of China.

Introduction

The institute is located in the Huajiachi Campus, Zhejiang University.

The institute mainly pays attention on the entomology and its applications, especially in the agricultural aspects. It currently holds the national key program of the ''Agricultural Entomology and Pest Control''.

The institute also offers postgraduate educations on entomology and agricultural sciences. Currently there're about 50 and 55 PhD candidates working in the institute. It has 17 full professors and more other support staffs and researchers.

Hubin Campus, Zhejiang University

Hubin Campus , was a defunct urban campus of the Zhejiang University.

Introduction

The campus was just aside the West Lake. ''Hu '' means ''lake'' in Chinese, and stands for the West Lake; ''bin '' means ''bank'' or ''shore''; so it's a lakeside campus. The campus was previous Zhejiang Medical University before 1998. 1998, the Zhejiang Medical University was merged into the Zhejiang University, and then became its medical school. Its main teaching building once was one of the tallest building in the , and was regarded as one of the landmarks around the West Lake. The campus was just in the central downtown of Hangzhou, and was just along its most famous shopping street - the Yan'an Road .

The campus also owned clinic departments and a hospital of 2960 beds. It was one of the centers for the medical training and research in Zhejiang Province. It had one State Key Laboratory, directed directly by the , ; one State Key Laboratory directed by the State Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau, PRC; and three Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratories. It had a library of half million collection, specilized on medical and pharmaceutical sciences.

According to the Hangzhou civic plan, the campus was sold to the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts at a price of 2.46 Chinese Yuan. The teaching buildings were torn down by explosions. The land of the campus was planned to buid a luxurious hotel.

Huajiachi Campus, Zhejiang University

Huajiachi Campus , is a major campus of Zhejiang University.

Introduction

The campus owns a famous lake named ''Huajiachi'', which is the second largest lake in Hangzhou after the West Lake. ''Hua '' is a common Chinese surname, and ''jia '' means ''family'' in ; so ''Huajia'' implies that this place probably belonged to the Hua Family in the ancient time. ''Chi '' stands for ''lake''. And the campus is just named after the lake.

Before 1998, it was the campus of the Zhejiang Agricultural University . In 1998, the university was merged into the Zhejiang University. In fact, before 1953, the ZAU was an agriculture Sschool of the Zhejiang University, so it was a kind of rejoining, the same as the previous Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Medical University. etc.

The campus owns a total surface of 1484 '''', with a constructional area of 0.3 million m². It owns a botanical garden, which is the first one in modern China's history.

Huajiachi Botanical Garden, Zhejiang University

The Huajiachi Botanical Garden , is a botanical garden of Zhejiang University.

Introduction

It's the earliest modern botanical garden in China's history. It was first founded in August 1927 by Prof. Guanguang ZHONG , who was the pioneer of the modern China's botany. Mr. Zhong was also a native from Zhenhai, Ningbo.

The garden is located inside the Huajiachi Campus, Zhejiang University, and it's just aside the .

The garden has a area of 0.93 hectare, and owns more than 1000 different kinds of plants. It's the sencond largest botanical garden of Zhejiang University, after the largest Yuquan Botanical Garden, which is located near the Yuquan Campus, Zhejiang University.

Huajiachi

Huajiachi or Huajia Chi, Huajiachi Lake , is a famous lake in , Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China.

Introduction

The lake now is sited inside the Huajiachi Campus, Zhejiang University. It's a beautiful lake and is the second largest lake in Hangzhou after the famous West Lake . Along the lake there's a Chinese pavilion named ''Huxin Ting'' . The lake has a water surface of more than 90 '''' and average depth of 2 meters .

''Hua '' is a common Chinese surname, and ''jia '' means ''family'' in ; so ''Huajia'' implies that this place probably belonged to the Hua Family in the ancient time. ''Chi '' stands for ''lake''. And the Zhejiang University campus is just named after this lake.

There's a fairy tale about the lake. About six-hundred years ago, it was wasteland nearby, and a highly-ranked official Mr. Hua during Ming Dynasty once passed-by and first settled down there, opened the wasteland.

Hangzhou Binjiang Hospital, Zhejiang University

Hangzhou Binjiang Hospital , is an of Zhejiang University for the public.

Introduction

The hospital is currently under construction. It's located in the Binjiang District, , Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China. The construction opened on 28 January, 2008; Mr. ZHANG Xi , Prof. YANG Wei , and Mr. WANG Guoping also participated in the opening ceremony.

The hospital has a total area of 150 '''', with a total building area of 166,9000 m². It will have patient beds 1200. The hospital is scheduled to fully open in 2009.

Hangchow University Historic Site

Hangchow University Historic Site , is a famous National Historic Site & Cultural Heritage under State Protection of the People's Republic of China.

Introduction

The site is located in , Zhejiang Province, and close to the Qiantang River and the Liuhe Pagoda. It currently located in the Zhijiang Campus of Zhejiang University, and the university manages its daily operation. The site has very beautiful landscapes and architectures. It became a national key historic site mainly due to its precious architectures of the Republic of China , which has a special combination of both the and styles.

Brief history

The Hangchow University was also a root of current modern Zhejiang University. It was one of the thirteen most well-known in China's modern history before 1951.

The history of Hangchow University can be traced back to 1845. A priest named Divie Bethune McCartee of American Presbyterians first founded the Ningpo Boy’s Academy / Boarding School 　in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. 1867, the school was moved into Hangzhou and changed its name into Hangchow Presbyterian Boys' School .

1897, the school opened courses for higher education, and became a college, named Hangchow Presbyterian College . 1914, its name was changed into Hangchow Christian College . 1909, the Presbyterian Church in the United States also participated in the college's daily operation. During the Northern Expedition period, the college was ceased for a while. 1931, the government renamed the college as the Hangchow College of Sciences and Humanities , because the college itself only had two branches - science and literature, at that time. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, the college moved through numerous places to avoid the Japanese invasion and military campaign, including , Shanghai, Shaowu , Guiyang , Chongqing , etc. 1948, the college had two more faculties of engineering and business , and was promoted into the university status, named Hangchow University .

After setting up of the communist People's Republic of China, in 1951, the university was handed over to the Zhejiang Provincial Government, and all the American teachers were sent back to United States. 1952, the Adjustment for University Colleges and Departments started, and the most part of Hangchow University was merged into the Zhejiang University.

Guanghua Law School, Zhejiang University

Guanghua Law School , is a renowned law school in , Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China.

Introduction

It's a law school of Zhejiang University. It's now located in the Zhijiang Campus, Zhejiang University, close to the Liuhe Pagoda and the Qiantang River.

Brief history

It was reorgnaized in 2007, when it's the 110th anniversary of Zhejiang University. Before, it was the Zhejiang University's law school, which was first founded in 1945.

1952, due to the Adjustment of University Colleges & Departments , Zhejiang University was dissociated and only kept it's engineering and a few science parts. Its humanities and major science parts were separated from the university and further formed the new Hangzhou University, so the law school was moved into the newly established Hangzhou University, became its Department of Law.

1995, the Department of Law, Hangzhou University was enlarged and developed into the Law School, Hangzhou University. 1998, the Hangzhou University re-merged into the Zhejiang University, so that Zhejiang University re-obtained its law School.

The Duan and Ding's endowment to Zhejiang University was a news-breaking endowment to Zhejiang University. It's the largest private one-off endowment to a university in Mainland China.

Introduction

On September 21, 2006, the billionaires Duan Yongping and Ding Lei co-donated once 40 million US dollars to Zhejiang University. 30 million USD was from Duan with 10 million from Ding.

The Zhejiang University General Secretary Zhang Xi and the President Yang Wei received the donation, on behalf of Zhejiang University. A ceremony was held at the newly founded .

Chu Kochen Honors College, Zhejiang University

Chu Kochen Honors College , is an elite undergraduate college of Zhejiang University.

Introduction

The college is named after the former President of Zhejiang University, the meteorologist, geologist and educator Coching Chu . It was founded in May 2000. Currently it has students of 1800. Every year, Zhejiang university selects about 400 top students to join the college.

The Chao Kuang Piu High-tech Development Fund , is a fund at Zhejiang University, for promoting high-tech innovation and development.

Introduction

The Hong Kong-based Chao Kuang Piu , who is a Zhejiang native , donated 10 million to Zhejiang University. The goal of the fund is to promote high-tech innovation and development at Zhejiang University. The fund is named after Chao Kuang Piu for his generous financial supports and contributions to the university.

Chao again donated 18 million HKD to the university. The donation was used to build the ''Chao Kuang Piu High-tech Building'' , which is coupled with the fund.

December 2001, Chao further donated 20 million HKD to found the current ''Chao Kuang Piu High-tech Talent Fund'' , which is also coupled with the previous High-tech Development Fund.

Center of Mathematical Sciences, Zhejiang University

Center of Mathematical Sciences , is a renowned mathematical research center in the People's Republic of China. It belongs to the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou.

Introduction

The center was mainly founded by the Fields Medalist Shing-Tung Yau in August 2002. The first co-honorary directors were mathematicians Su Buqing and Shiing-Shen Chern, both of whom are natives . The first academic director of the center is Shing-Tung Yau .

Center for Research of Private Economy, Zhejiang University

Center for Research of Private Economy , is an economic research center of Zhejiang University.

Introduction

The center mainly focuses on the . It has very broad relationships with the local economy and governments of the Zhejiang Province and the industries within the , because this area has one of the most advanced, active private economies and developed industries in the People's Republic of China.

It's the first such center founded by and at a Chinese University in the Mainland China. It's also led directly by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, and is the only research institute in such domain. According to some reviews, it's one of the best economic research centers and top advisors to the government in the Mainland China. .

Black Rock Peak

The Black Rock Peak , or Wushi Peak, is a hill located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China. It just faces to the of Zhejiang University.

Introduction

The peak has an altitude of only 125 meters, which is also relatively high in urban Hangzhou. Because the rocks on the hill are nearly black , so people gave such name to the hill. It's also called as the Camel Peak by some Hongzhou local elders, probably due to its shape.

On the huge rocks of the hill, people can see the panoramic West Lake, so it's also one of the ideal sites for viewing West Lake's whole landscapes .

Anzhong Science and Technology Promotion Fund

The Anzhong Science and Technology Promotion Fund , is a fund of Zhejiang University mainly for promoting scientific research and technological innovation.

Introduction

The fund is based on the donation from the famous Hong Kong-based Zhao Anzhong , who was a Zhejiang native .

Mr. Zhao donated 14 million to Zhejiang University in 2005. The Zhejiang University General Secretary Zhang Xi and the President Pan Yunhe received the endowment on behalf of the university, and a ceremony was also held.

One part of the fund was to build a new building for the Zhejiang University College of Biomedical Engineering and Instrument Science. The building was finished in 2007, and is named after Mr. Zhao. The rest of the fund is for promoting the scientific research and technological innovation at Zhejiang University.

A recently finished teaching building is also named after Mr.Zhao, the building currently belongs to the Zhejiang University College of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
